All about Butterfly Gear...

Butterfly Gear is Africa's first site dealing in butterfly (and moth!) related items.

It is a part-time business run by a small team of myself: Steve Woodhall and my wife Jayne. The idea is to start small and add product lines as the business grows.

Have a look at the product categories, and see what we have!

This is a part time business we've started, following the publication of my two books with Struik - Field Guide to Butterflies of SA and 'What's that Butterfly?'. I developed a lot of design skills when working on these books and bought a Mac with Adobe's DTP package InDesign. I had a lot of people asking me about posters etc, and Struik weren't interested in publishing these when I designed them. The existing poster publishers were just plain greedy and my editor at Struik said 'why not self-publish?' So we did our homework and here we are. Believe it or not, none of the book supply chain people are interested in handling posters, so we are doing our own for now until we have the volume to use Berco or similar. Right now we do a lot of work evenings and weekends!

We have no intention of turning this into a major publishing house overnight. I have a demanding job in addition to duties as a Struik author and as President of the Lepidopterists' Society. It's something we want to grow slowly and eventually allow us to semi-retire and concentrate on butterfly related projects. The idea is, to grow the business organically out of profits, and not entertain any debt. That's why we want to deal on a cash basis.

The medium term plan is to offer more poster titles, which will be put on the site as they are published. Later, greetings cards, bookmarks, calendars etc are planned, and eventually books, insect collecting equipment, etc. etc.
